Atlanta, Georgia (September11, 2006)—Former UCLA head coach and San Francisco 49er general manager, Terry Donahue has joined the Master Coaches Survey beginning with the 2006 college football season. The Master Coaches Survey, which is made up of 17 of the most heralded retired college football coaches, will kick off its second season by releasing its first poll of the 2006 season on Monday, September 18th.
Donahue, one of the youngest coaches ever elected to the College Football Hall of Fame, won 151 games at UCLA during his 20 seasons at the helm of his alma mater. His 98 Pac-10 conference wins makes him the winningest coach in Pac-10 history, nudging Master Coach Don James of Washington by just a single game. Starting in the 1982 season, Donahue had a string of eight consecutive wins in bowl games. While winning five Pac-10 championships, his UCLA teams were ranked in the top 10 nationally five times, and he led the Bruins to four appearances in the Rose Bowl.
Donahue coached 34 first team All-Americans and over 100 of his players were selected in the NFL draft. Notable Bruins that he coached were Troy Aikman, Jerry Robinson, Ken Norton, Jr. and Kenny Easley.
“I’m glad to finally join the Master Coaches Survey,” Donahue said. “I received an invitation to be in the original group, but I had other pressing obligations last season. It will be fun working with these esteemed coaches.”
Master Coach John Cooper commented on his former coaching mate, “It will be great working with Terry again. He will add another Hall of Famer to the MCS list. We were assistant coaches together at Kansas in the late 1960’s, and we’re very good friends.”
