Sam Swank kicked 3 field goals
over 50 yards vs NC State

Master Football Coaches Award MCS Game Balls
No. 25 Wake Forest's Sam Swank named
Special Teams Player of the Week

By MCS Staff

ATLANTA (October 16, 2006) – Sam Swank became the fifth player in the history of NCAA football to kick three field goals of 50-plus yards in a single game.  Swank booted a 51-yarder and tied the school record twice with a pair of 53-yard field goals in their 25-22 win over North Carolina State.  No. 25 Wake Forest is off to their best start since 1979, due in large part to the foot of Sam Swank.  For his outstanding kicking, Swank is awarded the “MCS Game Ball” (www.mcspoll.com) for special teams player of the week.

Each week during the 2006 college football season, the 17 Master Football Coaches will award an MCS Game Ball to the respective schools of an Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week. The Master Coaches will also present a game ball to the offensive and defensive coordinator whose game plans made the biggest impact in their respective teams' victory.

In addition to Meekins, the Master Football Coaches will also award MCS Game Balls to Indiana quarterback Kellen Lewis, Wake Forest kicker Sam Swank, Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst and Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops.

Special Teams
Sam Swank, K Wake Forest

Sam Swank of Wake Forest became only the fifth player in NCAA history to kick three field goals of 50-plus yards in a single game.  He booted a 51-yarder and tied the school record twice with a pair of 53-yarders in their 25-22 victory over N.C. State.  Swank and the Demon Deacons are off to their first 6-1 start since 1979 and make their first appearance in the Master Coaches Poll this week at No. 25.

Offense
Kellen Lewis, QB Indiana

Redshirt freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis played the game of his life against No. 12 Iowa, leading his Indiana Hoosiers to the 34-31 upset.  Lewis passed for career-highs in passing yards with 255 and touchdowns with 3.  He completed 19-of-25 passes on the day and rushed for a touchdown as well.  His touchdown pass to wide receiver James Hardy with 9:41 remaining iced the victory for the Hoosiers.

Defense
Ramel Meekins, DT Rutgers

Facing one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights shut out the Navy Midshipmen 34-0.  Defensive tackle Ramel Meekins played a huge role in the Rutgers shutout, recording a career-high 12 tackles and forcing three fumbles.  When Navy decided to pass, Meekins disrupted their plan as well, sacking the quarterback twice

Offensive Coordinator
Paul Chryst, Wisconsin

In the battle for the Paul Bunyan Axe, No. 16 Wisconsin had no trouble keeping it for another year.  “I can’t give enough credit to Paul Chryst and our offensive coaches for playing to our team’s strengths,” Badger head coach Bret Bieliema said.  Chryst and Wisconsin executed their plan against Minnesota, totaling 400 yards of offense in the 48-12 victory.  Freshman P.J. Hill rushed for 164 yards and 2 scores, while veteran quarterback John Stocco threw for 193 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Defensive Coordinator
Mark Stoops, Arizona

The Stanford Cardinal entered this weekend poised to get their first victory of the season.  Mark Stoops and the Arizona defense had a different plan.  Stanford kept the ball for only 21 minutes and 23 seconds in the entire game.  The Arizona defense held the Cardinal to just one third down conversion on eight attempts in their 20-7 win.  Stanford was able to muster only 52 total yards of offense against Stoops’ Wildcat defense and was held to a minus six yards rushing on the day.
