Master Football Coaches Award MCS Game Balls
No. 2 Michigan Defensive End LaMarr Woodley named Defensive Player of the Week
By MCS Staff
ATLANTA (October 30, 2006) – Michigan senior defensive end LaMarr Woodley was named a Lott Trophy quarterfinalist on October 25. The Lott Trophy honors the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year, and Woodley proved why he is in contention to receive the award against Northwestern. He led the second-ranked Wolverines defensively with three tackles for loss and had four tackles total. Woodley tallied two quarterback sacks, stripping the football from Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bacher early in the first quarter, which led to a Wolverine score. He also recovered a fumble as No. 2 Michigan went on to win 17-3. For his tremendous defensive effort, LaMarr Woodley is awarded the "MCS Game Ball" for defensive player of the week.
Each week during the 2006 college football season, the 17 Master Football Coaches will award an MCS Game Ball to the respective schools of an Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week. The Master Coaches will also present a game ball to the offensive and defensive coordinator whose game plans made the biggest impact in their respective teams' victory.
In addition to Woodley, the Master Football Coaches will also award MCS Game Balls to Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, Oregon State wide receiver and punt returner Sammie Stroughter, Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Larry Fedora and Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster.
Defense
LaMarr Woodley, DE Michigan
No. 2 Michigan held Big Ten foe Northwestern to just 3 points in their victory, due in large part to the play of senior defensive end, Lamarr Woodley. Woodley was named a quarterfinalist for the Lott Trophy on October 25, an award that honors the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. He proved why as he made four tackles in the game, including three for a loss of 21 total yards. Woodley sacked C.J. Bacher twice and forced Bacher to fumble early in the first quarter, which led to a Wolverine touchdown. He also added a fumble recovery in the 17-3 victory.
Offense
Colt McCoy, QB Texas
Redshirt freshman quarterback Colt McCoy led the No. 4 Texas Longhorns to an impressive comeback victory against Big 12 foe, Texas Tech. Texas trailed 21-0 early, but McCoy took control of the game, completing 21-of-31 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns. His 28-yard touchdown pass to Quan Cosby with 13:24 remaining in the 4th proved to be the game-winner. He also rushed for 68 yards, including a 33-yard scamper on third down with less than two minutes to play, sealing the victory.
Special Teams
Sammie Stroughter, WR/KR Oregon State
Junior punt returner Sammie Stroughter was instrumental in Oregon State’s upset over the third-ranked USC Trojans. Midway through the third quarter, Stroughter fielded a punt and returned it 70-yards for a touchdown, as the Beavers took a 30-10 lead. Oregon State held off the Trojans comeback attempt and hung on for a 33-31 upset win. Stroughter also added 127 yards receiving on 8 catches from his wide receiver position.
Offensive Coordinator
Larry Fedora, Oklahoma State
Offensive coordinator Larry Fedora led the nation’s eleventh-ranked offense against No. 19 Nebraska in a Big 12 match-up. Fedora’s Cowboys had three plays of 45 yards or longer and eight plays of 15 yards or more as they erased an early 16-0 deficit. Their offense gained 518 yards of offense, including 289 rushing yards. Oklahoma State went on to defeat the Cornhuskers 41-29 in the upset win.
Defensive Coordinator
Bud Foster, Virginia Tech
No. 11 Clemson brought one of the top rushing tandems in the nation into Blacksburg and was stymied by Bud Foster’s stingy defense. Davis and Spiller gained just 71 yards between them as the Hokies upset the Tigers, 24-7. Clemson scored on its opening possession, but never scored again and totaled just 172 yards of offense. The Hokie defense also forced two turnovers, including an interception by linebacker Xavier Adibi that set the tone for the second half.
