Heard on the conference call (November 16 ):
A total of 10 teams enter the final stages of the 2005 regular season with lone losses on their records, a topic the Master Coaches weighed in on Wednesday during their teleconference call in which they rank the Top 25 programs.
In particular, the strengths and weaknesses of several of these teams:
"UCLA's quarterback (Drew Olson) takes over the game, but they're (the Bruins) an enigma because they don't play defense at all," said former Stanford head coach John Ralston.
"Did you look at the stats of UCLA quarterback?" asked George Welsh. "Olson threw for 510 yards on 22 completions .... what is that 25 yards per completion. I don't think I have ever seen anyone have that kinda of success in a game before."
"Alabama offensive line is very suspect, and they cannot protect their quarterback," said former Tide coach Gene Stallings. "They're a great tackling team, and very few people can score on them. But the offense also has a hard time scoring once they get to the plus (red) zone."
"LSU's quarterback (JaMarcus Russell) is not making many mistakes," said former Auburn coach Pat Dye. "It was obvious LSU wasn't ready to play when they started the game (against Alabama), and they weren't tackling anyone. But they were able to make the transition at halftime."
"Miami has always been a good pass-protection team," said former Virginia coach George Welsh. "And when the defense wants to play, they're real solid there, too."
