Heard on the conference call (October 26 ):

....George Welsh said, "I'm more impressed with Virginia Tech than I was last year. They might have the best defense in the top 10. I really mean that. They have a good pass rush from from the four down linemen. I wasn't sure about their offensive line, but in the fourth quarter last week, they just barrelled down the field against Maryland. They wore Maryland down. They're a very good football team. They have balance, they have experience, they have speed, and their kicking game is always one of the best in the country."

....Dick MacPherson said, "The question is how will Virginia Tech play against a top-20 team in Boston College. I think Virginia Tech knows the BC defense, so Virginia Tech should really shine on national television and Boston College will be exposed."

....Pat Dye said, "I think Georgia wins the game, even with it being on Florida's home field in Jacksonville ... even though the Florida people don't feel like that. I think Georgia's defense will shut Florida down. And if Georgia decides to run the football, they've got the backs and the offensive line to do it. Now, they may go down there and try to beat Florida throwing the football, and if they do that, they'll be in serious trouble."

....Hayden Fry said, "Wisconsin is one of the most mysterious teams I've ever seen in college football. They've won games with their rushing. They've looked terrible rushing. They've won games with their passing. They've looked terrible passing. Their offense is very inconsistent. They've won two games with their defense where it came up with big plays. If Wisconsin ever puts it together, they'll be one of better teams in the nation. They haven't played all segments of the game together yet."
